Birth Stories

When both our boys were born I wrote a birth story for them both - mainly as I knew I would soon forget little details.

The Rizzle aka Crazy 1

Having dreamed of having a baby for so many years my pending due date could not come quick enough. To help speed up the last trimester I was the last of 5 friends to have a baby and not to mention it my brother was getting married the weekend before my due date (that was great planning!!!)

I made it through the wedding but with everyone watching me with a close eye as my ‘show’ had come the day before. Yippee this is it, labour usually starts within the next 48 hours – or so I thought. Oh no…………

Another week soon past and we came to my due date – Nothing. By now my husband Mike was getting impatient as well - I had developed pregnancy snoring and he was having to sleep in our spare bed!!!

That night we tried the hot curry thing to see if there was any truth to it, and to our surprise I started getting contractions that were about 10 minutes apart. I was unsure at first because they felt exactly like the Braxton Hicks I had been experiencing since 23 weeks. I knew that if they were just Braxton Hicks, they would go away if I had a bath so I did. Sure enough they stopped.

The following morning we were booked to see the specialist at the hospital to get checked out for inducing. After being poked a few times, and being told my baby has a big bottom I was booked to be induced in 3 days.

That night we tried another hand-me-down suggestion (I really didn’t want to be induced) and went for a walk around the neighbourhood in what felt like 1 degree above freezing. While walking I also tried another suggestion of walking with one foot on the footpath and the other in the gutter (apparently to jiggle things around). We arrived back home with near hypothermia and still nothing.

At 4am the following morning I woke with period like pains. Thinking that the baby had rolled to a funny position I rolled over and went back to sleep. 10 mins later it came again. Without thinking about it (I had serious pregnant brain syndrome by this stage) I thought maybe I just needed to go to the toilet. Got up, went, and got back into bed. 10 mins later there it was again. Now I was wide awake and started thinking maybe.

I told Mike that the walk had obviously worked and that I was going to run a bath to check that it wasn’t just Braxton Hicks.

Once in the bath the pains started to come every 6 minutes. But then after only 2 at that time delay they quickly dropped to 4 minutes apart. Crikey this is it.

After talking to my midwife and telling her I felt fairly calm and thought I can hold out at home for a wee while, I got dressed and concentrated on breathing through each contraction. However within about 15 minutes I started to feel quite ill, so we rang her back and said we would meet her at the hospital.

At the hospital she checked my dilation – 3 cms, but I twisted her arm into saying I was 4!  I made my way into the pool and while on my knees with arms draped over the side I began the repeated process of breathing through each contraction. I found a blue speck on my white towel to concentrate on while breathing so that I wasn’t fully focusing on the increasing pain that was coming with each new contraction.

When I was checked again for dilation I had finally made it to 8 cms. To get mentally prepared for the transition I had to sit on the toilet for 3 contractions on my own. I thought it was cruel at the time, that I had no help, but in hindsight it really made me think ‘I can do this’.

Once back in the pool it didn’t take long for the contractions to change and my desire to push increase. At this stage I thought I can’t do this, I need gas. After 30 mins on the gas it was time to get out and go back to the bed.
After a few hard goes at pushing we found my baby’s heart rate wasn’t recovering after each contraction so doctors were called in for Ventouse assistance.

With more pushing and two light pulls with the Ventouse, our baby boy was finally into the world.

After being told numerous times by my midwife that I was going to have a big baby you can imagine my surprise – and Mikes, when he was finally weighed. 5120gms – this meant nothing to me, I am ‘old school’. Converted = 11pd 4oz. The specialist was right he did have a big bottom!

The Rubiks Cube - aka Crazy 2

Here we go again…

At around 6 weeks I soon realised I was pregnant again, even though Mike didn’t believe me. A quick pregnancy test soon solved that issue but also appeared to bring on morning sickness!!

It is amazing how much you forget from the first time and how much harder it is with a toddler standing at the toilet door wanting your attention while you bring up breakfast.

Right from the beginning I thought this kid isn’t going to be a biggy just stick to a basic diet, don’t each too much sweet stuff (almost be like a diabetic) and try to do some exercise. Yeah well that lasted about a week didn’t it.
Once again the morning sickness hung around for as long as possible – around 20 odd weeks again and then the braxton hicks kicked in. This time 9 months seemed to take forever to get here, but the swelling belly seemed to appear instantly.

Yet again there was a family wedding planned a week before due day – in Blenheim of all places too. So I figured this kid was going to come while all my family were down South. It was supposed to be all about me!!! The wedding weekend came and went and yet again still no child.

Again I tried the ‘old wives tale’ tricks to bring on labour – sitting for 10 mins with a breast pump on, jumping and dancing round the lounge with Riley, Raspberry Leaf Tea (spew!!) and tried walking with one foot in the gutter and one on the footpath – NOTHING!!!

After trying my best to get my blood pressure up before each midwife visit, Krystle – midwife, suggested we don’t wait as long this time to start doing ‘sweeps’. So Wednesday (22nd – 2 days over) I met with her at the hospital, was checked out, monitored and had the sweep done.

After walking about 2 blocks back to the car I sat down and thought ‘man that hurts’. Thought nothing of it and drove off to pick up Riley. When I got there, again I noticed how sore my lower stomach was and thought ‘gees she was rough’. Drove home and AGAIN thought ‘oooo pain best lie down’. Note: You would think by now that some preggy Mums would click that they could be in labour.

Finally the penny dropped and I thought ‘hmm this could be labour’. I ran a bath to see if they disappeared and they didn’t – 10mins apart then quickly dropped to 5mins apart. Oh Crap – home alone with a toddler asleep in bed, what do I do. After a quick call to Mike to say be prepared to pack up, I rang Mum who got to our place in record time.

After a few more contractions common sense kicked into gear and I rang to summon Mike back home.

At about 4.30 Mum got a bit bossy and told me it was perhaps a bright idea to get to the hospital as you wouldn’t want to get stuck half way and push the kid out on the side of the road. With the latter part mentioned I was very quick to get in the car, but oh no I can’t get hold of Krystle, my midwife is AWOL??? Nuts. Still I would rather be at the hospital with no midwife than at home, get in the car.

At the hospital it all came flooding back – oh the pain that was coming my way. Then I thought you have done it before just do everything the same again. So the pool was filled and we were into it.

After a while in the pool I was told I could start pushing if the desire was there to do so. Well HANG YES!!!!! So each contraction I was pushing. When nothing seemed to be happening I had to waddle back to the bed to be checked for dilation. Perfect I was only 7cm, STOP PUSHING. Riiiigggghhhhtttt.

After a while longer of breathing through the pain with the gas and a little help from Krystle he started to make his move. But rather than be nice and simple he decided to come through with his fist at his cheek. Oh the pain. Finally at nearly 10pm our wee boy was born weighing a lovely 10 pound 9 – lightweight compared to his brother.

Where is time going??

I cannot believe how time speeds up once you have children.  Seriously!  I very vividly remember the arrival of our first sweet boy way back in May 2007 and yet this week we were called into his future school to meet with the principal!  What on earth!

How can it be that this wee babe will be at school next year.

Such an appropriate tee for this one!

I am realising quickly that you can't sweat the small stuff!  They aren't small for long.

Home @ 67

5.00pm - o.k so this is actually from yesterday and we weren't at home.

We took the boys to the Japan v Canada RWC game in Napier.  They were so excited however this poor wee mite came down with possible Strep Throat two days prior and was on antibiotics and Pamol.  We were probably sitting for no more than 10 mins when I noticed he was starting to nod off!  Needless to say we spent most of it sitting on the ground (he and I) while everyone else was standing - so no rugby!  He woke and perked up a bit with 10 mins to go, so decided it was running time and took off.  Great when there are thousands of people there!  NOT!

Loving the warmer weather and daylight saving.  Surely that means winter bugs will soon be over???!!!?!?!?!?!

RWC Oh How We LOVE Thee

My precious 4 year old is so in love with the World Cup and the All Blacks at the moment.  Well actually both of the Crazys are.  Yesterday at Kindy was a RWC day and you had to go dressed supporting your favourite team.

There were no second guesses for our boy - it had to be the All Blacks and it HAD to be Ritche McCaw.

Rather than paying $120 for the real thing I made my own - so much fun trying to work it out and then putting it all together under the ever so watchful eye of the 4 year old.

Take one black tee and sew on the white collar from a $1 op shop shirt.  Take a silver metallic sharpie and add the fern, All Blacks, player number and of course surname (I know they don't have their names but he loved it anyway).  Then sneak out a pair of hubbys black work socks, cut off the toes so they fit, sew them up and draw two silver rings around the top.

And waala you have your own home made AB's shirt for $8.

Cute!

So proud

Might have to work on the Haka though!

Lazy Sunday Lunch/Dinner

I have found the perfect lazy Sunday meal - we had it for dinner last night as we have one child with Strep Throat and the other still has 'The Cough', and I just plain couldn't be bothered cooking.

This has to be the easiest meal that fills me up when I am done:

Blurry photo I know - the books picture looked better than my end result!
Salsa Souffle Roll

6 egg
1/3 cup plain flour
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup milk
1 cup tasty cheese, grated

For the Salsa
3 large tomatoes, chopped
1 Tbsp red onion, chopped
squeeze of lemon juice
 1 Tbsp sweet chilli sauce
2 Tbsp parsley, chopped

Preheat oven to 250C.  Place eggs, milk, flour and salt in a blender and whiz to combine, then add the grated cheese afterwards.

Pour mixture into a well greased swiss roll tin around 33 x 23cm and bake for 15 minutes or until golden and puffed up.  While the souffle roll is cooking make the salsa by combining all the ingredients in a bowl and set aside.

When the souffle roll is cooked turn it out onto a clean tea towel.  Scatter over the salsa and roll up from the short side to form a swiss roll.  Place on a serving platter with the seam underneath.  Serve in thick slices.

NB:  I usually add some cooked bacon or Chorizo sausage as we are a 'meat family'! :)

Wiggles - Grrrrr

1,2,3 WAKE UP MUM

Dear Wiggles (I know they read my blog)

I have a serious bone to pick with you!  Why on earth would you create a song or think of saying 1,2,3 WAKE UP JEFF.  You see my darling boys think that it is appropriate to yell it at the top of their lungs when we are asleep.

Case in point, today I have a migraine.  For the first time in a while Nurofen just isn't cutting the mustard.  So I thought I would hide and have a wee nana nap on Crazy 2's bed while they watched some tele.   Good plan really.

Oh no - he had another idea.  no more than 5 mins after I lay my aching head on that boys delightful pillow did I hear him come flip flopping down the hallway, creep in and whisper 1,2,3 then yell in my ear WAKE UP MUM!

Seriously!

Regards

A super tired, overworked Mum

Boys and their toys

I thought this day would still be a little way off but no it has come today.  My boys desire to shoot guns!

As a farmers daughter I have never disliked the idea of boys playing with guns, however I was never certain on when it would happen, or more to the point when I WANTED it to happen.

So I was a little bit apprehensive when I walked into the Crazys room this morning to see them shooting each other with the end of their wooden ride on horses.  Somehow my boys have grown up overnight.  Last night they were riding the horses through the house, this morning hunting!

So where do I stand now with boys and guns???  They are currently shooting birds outside with guns I have made them.  I don't want to be the pedantic, nagging mother telling them to be careful and watch out.  I want them to be boys.

Its funny, I read a blog entry from a mum of 3 boys on the same issue here and kept thinking, when will it be my turn, when will I face this, what will I do??  I didn't think it would be my turn a few days later!

I am slowly giving them rules in relation to guns, but at the moment it is just shooting a Duplo Blocks gun at sparrows out the window.

In reality I have to remind myself that when they have close family members who frequently go duck and possum hunting, that they are going to be exposed to guns perhaps sooner rather than later.  Start educating now I guess.

Pernell Fruitworld Kindy Trip

Rileys kindy did a field trip to Pernell Fruitworld on Pakowhai Road this morning.  They LOVED it.

We all piled in to two trailers and were towed through the orchard to the paddocks of animals.  We were happily greeted by the MAD black billy goat who had no fear in jumping up the sty to be fed.

The boys were more interested in jumping around in the trailer - I guess the benefits of having grandparents with a farm.

It wasn't until the white donkey 'Sam' came over that they finally ventured to the fence to feed him.

It was a great morning, UNTIL we arrived back at the beginning (and the playground) that my two absolutely melted and cried the whole way to the car - it was brilliant!

Rugby World Cup 2011

I have a super excited 4 year old and 2 year old prancing around the lounge singing Rugby World Cup 2011 is on soon, while wearing their new RWC 2011 caps.  How is it possible that they can link RWC 2011 to rugby balls, All Blacks, ITM (ITM Cup), or even goal posts!

For the last 6 months they have had great delight in pointing out these things while in the car or looking through books while yelling at the top of their lungs 'Rugby World Cup 2011'!

Needless to say I think tonight will be a family night in, watching the build up and fireworks over a bowl of popcorn - oh and a late night too :)

Come on AB's

7.30am - return of the appetites!

What??!! Wow, No Way!

Just a bit of a personal chuckle this morning.  This is the colour of my carpet in the office!  Why is that funny/interesting and why am I putting it on here?  Because for the last 4 months you haven't been able to see the carpet due to it be covered by boxes filled to the top with my grandfathers goodies that I am selling on TradeMe.

Slowly I am making a dent in it - before I go to collect some more!

Generational Family Love

This week I have enjoyed reading through my Grans diary from 1980 (the year I was born - young I KNOW!)  She is one totally inspirational lady.  Worked hard on the family orchard, faithfully looked after her grandchildren when needed, and shared many a laugh over family gathering dinners.

She used to pack a humungous (spelling???) picnic lunch for us grandies and take us for a walk from either our house in Flaxmere or my Uncles house in Lawn Road, all the way to their place in Havelock Road.  She was always a tresure hunter and taught us kids well.  We would scour the roadside as we walked.  I'm sure our parents were stoked when we came home with our treasures which usually included pinecones, sticks, feather etc.  Treasures in Grans eyes.

Her love for her family is evident in the way she writes her diary entries.  Every family members name (on birthday or wedding entires) begins Dear Joanne born, or Dear XXXX married today, or Dear XXXXX birthday.  She was one of a kind. You always knew you were special in Grans eyes.

This love has passed on to my Mum and to my siblings.

Sadly she passed away in 2007 and is still sorely missed.  She had the most amazing laugh and was always keen for a good chuckle.

We all still love you Gran xox
